In the world of tattoo culture, events that can unite ancient traditions and modern fashion are rare. However, this is exactly what happened with Bea Millan-Vindorski, Miss Universe Philippines 2026, who recently visited Buscalan village in Kalinga province. Here she received a unique tattoo from Grace Palicas, the niece of the legendary Apo Whang-Od – the most famous mambabatok (tattoo master) in the Philippines.
Centuries-Old Traditions
Tattoos hold deep significance in the culture of the Kalinga people. They not only adorn the body but also serve as markers of beauty, strength, and spiritual connection with ancestors. Bea Millan-Vindorski chose three dots as a symbol of generational continuity: from Apo Whang-Od to her niece Grace Palicas and granddaughter Elyang Wigan. This pattern also became a reminder of her mother and grandmother, who shaped her as a person.
“I am honored to be marked by the great Grace Palicas and to carry the stories of the women who came before me,” Bea wrote on Instagram. She emphasized that for the Kalinga, tattoos are not just art but a way to pass on values and beliefs to future generations.
A Story of Art’s Survival

Mambabatok, like many other traditional arts, faced the threat of extinction due to modernization and American occupation. Women with tattoos were condemned, and their patterns, full of symbols and prayers, were considered something foreign. However, thanks to the efforts of Apo Whang-Od, this art has not only survived but is thriving today. Her work has allowed tattoos to find their place on the bodies of Filipinos and visitors from around the world.
Beauty Beyond Appearance
Bea Millan-Vindorski noted that her perception of beauty changed after her visit to Kalinga. “For the Kalinga, tattoos are markers and enhancers of beauty. It was believed that only marks on the body could be taken to the afterlife, not gold or silver,” she said. This experience made her reflect on how beauty is not just about appearance but also about the depth of cultural heritage.
Preparing for the International Competition
In addition to the tattoo, Bea is actively preparing for the Miss Universe 2026 competition, which will be held in Puerto Rico in November. She began her preparations with runway training under the guidance of Ian Mendejar and with the support of MUPH President Jonas A. Gaffud. In May, Bea, representing the province of La Union, won the Miss Universe Philippines 2026 pageant, defeating 49 other contestants.
The Tattoo’s Significance for the Future
Bea’s tattoo symbolizes not only a personal connection to Kalinga culture but also the strength of Filipino heritage. She plans to proudly showcase this symbol on the international stage, emphasizing the importance of preserving traditions in the modern world.
This event has become an important moment not only for Bea but for the entire tattoo culture community. It reminds us that even in an era of technology and globalization, ancient traditions can find their place and inspire new generations.
