Within the walls of Stillwater Prison in Minnesota, an unusual experiment is unfolding, transforming incarceration time into professional skills. Daniel Gonzalez, one of the program’s participants, meticulously injects pigment into the skin of Israel Ray Gaitan, creating a monumental Mayan calendar image on his back. This work is a tribute to Gaitan’s mother, and it has already taken over 30 hours of painstaking labor. In conditions where each day resembles the last, such an activity becomes not just a craft, but a way to preserve humanity and find a new identity.
